Training in
Asset hierarchies and analysis with PI AF

Objectives

In this course, you will learn the skills necessary to successfully model your processes and equipment using the PI Asset Framework (AF) Server. This course discusses the methodologies needed to build representations of assets (AF Elements) and their associated data (AF Attributes). This course also includes real-time calculations (Asset Analytics), automatic creation of Events (Event Frames) and configuration of email notifications (PI Notifications).

Course Content

The Building PI System Assets and Analytics with Asset Framework (AF) class provides a working knowledge of the power of the AF Server, an integral part of the PI System.

You will learn how to define consistent representations of organizational assets and/or equipment and use these representations in simple or complex analyses that produce critical, actionable information. AF allows an application designer to identify and customize the components or elements that make up a process, associate real-time, relational or calculated data with these elements, specify the organizational structure through hierarchies or connectivity relationships, and apply calculations or rules against these assets and determine how the results should be displayed.

In this class we will discuss and build basic AF elements and attributes, build calculations and set up relational database queries. In a simulated environment, Asset Analytics is used to calculate metric data for Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE). We see how Event Frames are applied to monitor the production process for downtime situations and for process excursions. We explore the visualization of information with different PI Visualization Suite products. In the advanced exercises we discuss the combination of the various elements to provide users with complex information structures. We will build connections to relational databases and use that information in visualizations and analysis.

Notifications, which allow users to configure custom alarms through a standard user interface based on any data source, will also be covered in detail. Leveraging AF’s generic data access and template-based capabilities, users can redistribute alarm parameters in Notifications to similar assets across the enterprise. When operational deviations occur, Notifications can send alerts to a single recipient, a group of contacts, or an escalation team reflecting the organization’s chain of command.

Why apply for PI Asset Framework Training

  • Our staff works closely with Aveva OSIsoft’s development, training, and technical support teams to provide unique expertise and knowledge of Aveva OSIsoft products.
  • Additionally, our professionals receive ongoing training on all PI System tools.
  • Schedule PIPER Solutions requires a minimum of 2 weeks notice to prepare course documentation, prepare Azure virtual machines, and assign an instructor.

Timeline

PIPER Solutions will ship or deliver training materials on or before the first day of the course. A typical timeline from ordering service to completion is:

  • At least two weeks before the training: communication of prerequisites and dates of remote sessions with PIPER.
  • One week before the training – Preparation of Azure virtual machines. Training week – Remote training (3 days).
  • Each session is 8 hours (According to the availability of the students).

Requirements

The client is responsible for providing a fully equipped classroom. The minimum requirements for a classroom are:

  • One PC per person, with the minimum technical specifications of an I3 5th generation processor or higher, 4 GB of RAM, 15 GB of free hard drive space, TCP/IP networking, and Windows® 7 – Windows 10.
  • If using Azure, students must be able to connect to virtual machines via Remote Desktop Connection (the necessary firewall ports must be open).
  • If Azure cannot be used, there are a number of on-site software requirements that must be met. Your instructor will discuss these requirements with you and may also assist in testing Azure connectivity.
  • The participant group should be comprised of individuals with the following skill set:
Experience navigating a Microsoft Windows operating system.
  • Some experience working with Microsoft Excel.
  • Basic knowledge of the PI System is recommended, but not required.

AVEVA PI System™ Infrastructure Accreditation

The AVEVA PI System™ Infrastructure Accreditation recognizes partners that have a solid understanding of both the current business messaging around the AVEVA PI System infrastructure as well as a strong baseline technical knowledge of the full suite of AVEVA PI System™ products. Partners must have experience working on projects where the AVEVA PI System™ was used as part of the solution and must be able to describe the business impact of the implemented solution.

AVEVA PI System Installation Accreditation

The AVEVA PI System Installation Accreditation recognizes partners that have extensive experience installing and implementing AVEVA PI Systems in customer environments. Partners must have extensive knowledge of installation preparation, security guidelines, and configuration best practices for implementing a full AVEVA PI System.

Success Stories

Energy

Implementation of PI System in Microsoft Azure

Kallpa Generación S.A. centralized and standardized operational data across its three power plants — Kallpa, Cerro del Águila, and Puerto Bravo — through a PI System™ architecture deployed on Microsoft Azure™. The solution enabled real-time monitoring, advanced production and environmental calculations, and independent per-plant security management, even in remote locations with limited connectivity.

Oil and Gas

Implementation of AVEVA PI System at Iquitos Refinery

Petroperú digitalized operations at its Iquitos Refinery by implementing AVEVA PI System™, enabling real-time collection, historization, modeling, and visualization of operational data. The solution integrated the Foxboro I/A DCS control system, structured a 100-asset operational model in PI AF, and deployed 27 PI Vision displays, including an executive dashboard tracking the refining unit’s 4 critical KPIs.

Mining

Implementation of PI System at Buenaventura Mining Company.

In early 2018, Compañía de Minas Buenaventura assigned PIPER Solutions to analyze, design, and implement AVEVA PI System™ across its five main mining units in Peru: Uchucchacua, Tambomayo, Orcopampa, Coimolache, and the Río Seco plant. The project integrated more than a dozen control systems from different vendors (Siemens, Schneider, Wonderware, ABB, Rockwell) into a unified architecture, with 28 configured interfaces, hierarchical models aligned to SAP PM, and a corporate server in Lima to centralize the metallurgical balance — moving Buenaventura toward a fully digitalized, real-time monitored operation.
