Petroperú digitalized operations at its Iquitos Refinery by implementing AVEVA PI System™, enabling real-time collection, historization, modeling, and visualization of operational data. The solution integrated the Foxboro I/A DCS control system, structured a 100-asset operational model in PI AF, and deployed 27 PI Vision displays, including an executive dashboard tracking the refining unit’s 4 critical KPIs.

Digitalizing Operational Visibility at a Refinery

Refinería Iquitos needed a comprehensive solution to collect, historize, model, and visualize its operational data, extending that visibility beyond the control room. Key requirements included:

  • Operational visualization: visually representing refinery processes — storage, process plant, tanks, and an executive overview — for different levels of the organization.
  • Centralized operational data management: managing operations data and making it accessible to other areas and users beyond maintenance and operations.
  • Specialized training: building staff capability in PI System™ administration and visualization tools for long-term operational self-sufficiency.

An End-to-End AVEVA PI System™ Architecture

A complete AVEVA PI System™ architecture was implemented, spanning from plant-floor data capture to executive-level visualization:

  • PI System™ infrastructure: installation of PI Data Archive, PI Asset Framework (PI AF), PI Analytics, PI Event Frames, and PI Notifications.
  • Data collection interfaces: installation and configuration of a PI interface with the Foxboro I/A DCS control system via DCS UDP, including data consistency testing and monitoring/troubleshooting of problematic signals.
  • Operational model in PI AF: development of a model covering 100 assets with an average of 10 attributes per asset, forming the foundation for all subsequent calculations and visualizations.

Measurable Operational Impact

  • Complete operational model of Refinería Iquitos’s processes, with operational calculations built in PI Analytics and programmed logic to automatically send notifications for any deviation.
  • 27 PI Vision displays deployed, covering storage, process plant, tanks, and an executive view.
  • Executive dashboard with 4 critical KPIs: Fouling Coefficient, Unit Efficiency, Furnace Efficiency, and Boiler Efficiency — available in real time to support decision-making.
  • Successful integration with the Foxboro I/A Series DCS, ensuring the quality and consistency of data captured from the plant floor.

Why It Matters

  • Real-time operational visibility, from the plant floor to the executive view, on a single platform.
  • Early deviation detection through automated notifications, reducing the risk of major failures.
  • Standardized refining efficiency KPIs, enabling consistent tracking and comparison over time.
  • Cross-departmental data access, breaking down silos between operations, maintenance, and management.
  • Scalable foundation for advanced analytics: the 100-asset PI AF model is ready to incorporate new calculations, assets, or business units.
  • Staff self-sufficiency, enabled by training in PI System™ administration and visualization.
  • Reduced reliance on manual reporting, with historical and real-time data centralized in a single source of truth.
