Samay S.A.C. – Central Termoeléctrica Puerto Bravo

Arequipa, Perú

PIPER Solutions implemented the PIPER Operational Platform at Samay S.A.C.’s Puerto Bravo Thermal Power Plant to centralize, historize, and contextualize operational data from the GE Mark VIe control system. The project included the integration of more than 4,000 process signals, the development of a standardized operational model, real-time operational dashboards, and Active Directory integration, providing a solid foundation for operational intelligence, process optimization, and future advanced analytics initiatives.

Puerto Bravo Thermal Power Plant required a modern platform capable of consolidating and contextualizing operational data from its GE Mark VIe Distributed Control System (DCS), enabling efficient storage, organization, and visualization of critical operational information for operations and engineering teams.

Key challenges included:

  • Centralizing historical data from the GE Mark VIe DCS.
  • Ensuring reliable and continuous acquisition of thousands of operational signals.
  • Standardizing asset structures and process variables through a unified operational model.
  • Providing real-time and historical access to operational data for engineers and operators.
  • Implementing a secure architecture aligned with corporate IT standards.
  • Reducing the time required to search, analyze, and interpret operational information.

The organization needed a scalable solution capable of transforming raw process data into contextualized operational intelligence to support better decision-making.

PIPER Solutions implemented a complete Operational Intelligence Platform, integrating the plant’s operational ecosystem through a scalable architecture designed to support future analytics and digital transformation initiatives.

1. Integration with the Control System

PIPER Collector was deployed to automatically acquire data from the GE Mark VIe environment through industrial OPC connectivity, ensuring continuous and reliable collection of critical process information.

2. Industrial Historian Deployment

The PIPER Historian was implemented to store and manage real-time and historical operational data, providing a robust foundation for trend analysis, reporting, and operational performance monitoring.

3. Operational Model Development

Using PIPER Modeler, a comprehensive operational model was developed based on Samay’s recommended asset and system hierarchy.

The project included:

  • Creation of 4,037 operational tags from generation turbine systems.
  • Development of a centralized operational model.
  • Implementation of 26 asset templates to standardize equipment structures, attributes, and process variables.

4. Real-Time Operational Visualization

Advanced HMI dashboards were developed using PIPER View, enabling operators and engineers to monitor generation units, critical process variables, equipment status, and historical trends from a single operational interface.

5. Cybersecurity and Corporate Integration

The platform was integrated with Samay’s Active Directory, providing centralized authentication, role-based access control, and secure user management aligned with corporate cybersecurity policies.

Implemented Architecture

The solution was deployed using a distributed architecture consisting of:

  • Data acquisition server (PIPER Collector)
  • Contextualization and historian server (PIPER Modeler + Historian)
  • Visualization server (PIPER View)
  • OPC integration with GE Mark VIe
  • Centralized backup infrastructure
  • Active Directory integration

This architecture delivers scalability, security, high availability, and clear separation between operational technology (OT) and information management environments.

More Than 4,000 Operational Signals Centralized

The plant successfully consolidated operational data from its generation systems into a single platform, eliminating data silos and improving information accessibility.

Real-Time Operational Visibility

Operations teams now have access to unified dashboards that provide real-time monitoring of generation assets and critical performance indicators from a single interface.

Contextualized Industrial Data

The implementation of a structured operational model enabled the relationship of assets, systems, and process variables, significantly improving operational analysis and troubleshooting capabilities.

Foundation for Advanced Analytics

The deployed architecture provides the foundation for future initiatives such as:

  • Condition-Based Monitoring (CBM)
  • Predictive Analytics
  • Energy Optimization
  • Operational Intelligence
  • Industrial Artificial Intelligence Applications

Increased Operational Autonomy

Through comprehensive training and knowledge transfer, Samay’s teams gained the capability to manage, maintain, and expand the platform independently.
